FAQS
Why should I get my chimney swept?
In order to fully enjoy and benefit from the fire in your home, you need to ensure it is swept regularly. Without this regular sweeping, soot and/ or tar can build up increasing the risk of a fire.
How often should I get my chimney swept?
The most recent guidance provides a suggested schedule for sweeping, dependent upon the type of appliance. For solid fuel fires and stoves, these should be cleaned once a year for smokeless fuel but twice a year if using coal. Wood burning fires, should be cleaned every three months whilst in use. Gas or oil fired appliances should be cleaned annually. Follow this link on chimney safety from the fire service.
What time of year is best?
Following the fire services advise, if you have not used your fire or wood burner in a while, then you should always get it cleaned prior to use. If you are a regular user of your fire burner or wood burner, then follow the advise from the previous question and note there is no favoured time of year. It is worth noting that waiting times can increase in the winter months.
Will there be a mess?
During a chimney sweep, flooring and carpets around the work area will be covered. All steps will be taken to ensure that any mess is minimised using the latest dust control technology. We take all necessary precautions to leave your home as clean as it was before our visit. In the unlikely event of damage being caused, we are fully insured with public liability insurance up to £2,000,000.
Do I need to do anything to prepare?
Other than making sure that the immediate area around the fire is clear of furniture or belongings, there is no other required preparation on your part.
Can I have a specific time for my appointment?
During your booking, you will be asked for a preferred day and time. We will be able to provide you with a one hour slot in which we will arrive. We are unable to give an exact time of arrival due to unforeseen traffic or potential delays caused by the previous job. We will of course contact you if we are able to be with your earlier.
What happens to the soot that you remove?
All soot is collected and placed in refuse bags that can be placed in your domestic waste bin. If you wish for it to be taken away, a small charge will be required as once it is removed from site, it is viewed as commercial waste.
How and when do I pay?
Payment is made on completion of work. This can be cash, cheque or bank transfer.
Do I receive any proof to show that the chimney has been swept?
Upon completion of jobs, you will receive a certificate outlining any work carried out. Many insurance companies now request evidence of this for cover purposes.
